Sleep is a time for recovery, repair and restoration of the body and mind which is so important during these uncertain times. During her recent Q&A with Mammoth Dr Nicola Barclay, University of Oxford Sleep Scientist discusses the link between sleep quality and our immune system.
“Obviously, at the moment, we want to make sure that we can optimise our health and well-being, and so let’s talk a tiny bit about how sleep affects our immune system during sleep. Our brain secrete certain proteins that are essential to maintaining an adaptive immune system, and some of these are only secreted during sleep. And so sleep is essential to promote some pro-inflammatory cytokines and other chemicals that fight off infection. Some researchers also suggest that the ability of our bodies to respond effectively to certain vaccinations depends on healthy sleep
So, as and when a COVID-19 vaccine is readily available, we ought to make sure we’ve had a good night’s sleep before and after to optimise its effects. So finally, sleep well and stay healthy.”
