Debbie Martin is a Chartered Physiotherapist and Clinical Director at BWT Physio. Over the course of a 35-year career, Debbie has always maintained a keen interest in the latest research and technologies – leading her to pursue postgraduate qualifications in musculoskeletal medicine, pain management and acupuncture.

Having worked with patients from all walks of life (including a role as a physio at the last Commonwealth Games in Scotland), Debbie is keenly aware of the important role sleep and comfort play in the maintenance of health and wellbeing.

Debbie says:

“I deal with a range of patients, from sedentary workers to the weekend warriors. The challenge is always to enable patients to achieve beyond their perceived potential. And sleep is a vital component of that.

“Sleep is crucial to recovery. It assists the immune and endocrine system to create an environment that encourages repair and promotes good health. When sleep is disturbed, repair hormone production is interrupted and this can delay the healing process.

“Many patients underestimate the importance of sleep as part of their condition and how essential it is to recovery. I always make a point of asking my patients if they find themselves waking up feeling refreshed or tired on a day-to-day basis.”

Debbie and the team at BWT Physio place a lot of emphasis on sleep quality and comfort when treating patients and so she feels it is important that she can make a credible, clinical recommendation when people ask her about improving the sleep environment.

“As a health professional, the evidence base behind Mammoth’s technology is impressive. The fact that Mammoth is partnered with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy – the first product to achieve this status – supports BWT Physio’s philosophy of providing the ultimate in quality advice to our patients.”

Debbie first heard about Mammoth through her local independent bed retailer, Beds R Uzzz, when looking for a new mattress for her own son. She says,

“Our son has a hypermobility disorder and we were looking for a new mattress for him when he moved out to his first flat. We came across Mammoth and were sold on the benefits immediately.

“It’s been a revelation for him ever since and he’s even taken long taxis home at night rather than staying with friends, just so he can be in his own bed.”

Debbie Martin’s top sleep tips

Ban screens from the bedroom

Wind down with deep breathing and stretches in bed

Mammoth’s Health Partnerships Manager, Sarah Smith, explains why collaboration is key to the brand’s continuing success and shares how Chartered Physiotherapist Tracey Atkinson became the latest expert to put Medical Grade Foam technology through its paces.

As the saying goes: no man is an island. And neither is a business. At Mammoth we believe in the importance of collaboration and sharing best practice to achieve great results for customers.

Last month, as part of our research and design partnership with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), we brought in experienced physiotherapist Tracey Atkinson to cast her expert eye over our products and give her professional appraisal.

Before she got to grips with the Mammoth, Tracey explained how traditional sleep surfaces have always fallen short when it comes to protecting the body at night, and why it was no surprise that so many people in the UK today complain of back pain and musculoskeletal problems.

“Historically, there have been no genuine pressure-relieving seats or mattresses widely available for the consumer within the retail upholstery market, and none that a clinician can credibly recommend as being backed by a strong evidence base in relation to the management and prevention of long and short-term musculoskeletal conditions and illnesses.

“This can greatly affect any rehabilitation work performed by the physiotherapist and the patient.”

Tracey then went on to explain how the evolution of the mattress from the early pocket sprung surface hasn’t always reaped benefits for sleepers.

“Traditional mattresses with springs create counter pressure – the opposite to what is required when providing pressure relief. Memory foam is recognised as a pressure-relieving material. However, it is not designed for the human body and so presents certain problems when used in such applications. Memory foam requires heat and time to mould to the shape of the body, and as a result this can cause discomfort and dehydration through overheating.

“The rate of tissue breakdown, and therefore the likelihood of developing a pressure sore, has been shown to be greater when skin temperature is raised in neurologically impaired patients. This characteristic of memory foam can also affect the ability of an individual to move during the night, which can hinder musculoskeletal health.”

As those familiar with Mammoth’s technologies will know, our unique Medical Grade Foam mattresses are significantly more effective than other sprung or memory foam surfaces in achieving comfort, pressure relief, support and temperature regulation.

The qualities of Mammoth are well documented, thanks to the recognition received from both the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), and independent tests performed by product testing institution, SATRA.

But what does this mean in practice? We encouraged Tracey to examine our range with her expert eye. Her conclusion:

“On physically testing a variety of mattresses and pillows made up of Mammoth’s High Specification Medical Grade Foam, they provided the correct alignment and support for the spine. By testing the gap within the lumbar spine, the spine did not sink into the mattress so there was no lumbar curve present, neither was there too much of a gap, which would have suggested there was no support at all.”

As a brand that strives to improve health and wellbeing through the development of innovative furniture products, we are always open to the input of medical professionals who can help us deliver cutting edge products to consumers.

We also appreciate the support that many health experts have shown us over the last five years since we launched the first Medical Grade Foam mattress. Today, we work closely with a growing number of physios, chiropractors, personal trainers, nutritionists and other health professionals who understand the benefits of sleep for their patients and clients.

This weekend we are excited to be attending the 2015 Physiotherapy UK Conference and Exhibition at the BT Convention Centre in Liverpool.

Physiotherapy UK is a yearly event that sees physiotherapy specialists, managers, educators and stakeholders come together to examine the delivery of patient care and the improvement of practices. More than 250 speakers and presenters from across the world will be offering expert, forward thinking, and evidentiary advice and sessions to an array of industry leading organisations. The two day event represents an opportunity for all practitioners to maintain their CPD and connect with like-minded professionals.

As new research and design partners with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapiy (CSP), we are embracing this opportunity to introduce ourselves to the wider physiotherapy profession and showcase what it is that makes us natural bedfellows with the CSP.

We will be inviting physiotherapists from across the country to come along and learn more about our revolutionary comfort technologies including Medical Grade Foam and PostureCells, as well as learning about the wealth of research we have done into Mammoth’s ability to improve sleep and recovery.

In anticipation of the event, Mammoth boss John Tuton said:

“As we embark on our newly formed partnership with the CSP, we are thrilled to be attending Physiotherapy UK 2015. We passionately believe in the benefits our products can bring to the world of physiotherapy, and are keen to exhibit our successes among industry professionals.

“We are already fortunate enough to count a number of physiotherapists among our biggest fans, so it is both an opportunity to reinforce those relationships and foster new ones with experienced and knowledgeable health professionals.”

If you are attending Physiotherapy UK, why not come and see us. Or alternatively keep track of our latest updates from the show on our Facebook and Twitter.
